For the past 20 years
we have been owned by Siamese cats. Our first, Oliver purchased for Rachel
our daughter when she was just 17 years old. She asked for a dog, but
as we were all out at work I thought it unfair. Then someone, I can't
remember who, suggested that Siamese cats were like dogs but more independent.
Are Siamese cats like
dogs? No, they don't bark, however, they do have exceptionally deep, loud
voices that they use at every opportunity. They don't greet you with a
wag of their tail but they are always there at the door to welcome you
home with a growly greeting. They are very loyal, demand lots of attention
and will rule the roost if you let them but they do make wonderful devoted
pets
When Oliver was a
kitten, we felt guilty leaving him alone, so Sophie(see below) was purchased
to keep him company. Double trouble or what! Was he grateful, no, he obviously
wanted to be a spoilt "only cat". The gentle kitten that we
had come to love became a hissing spitting wild cat, lashing out at this
new tiny kitten who only wanted him to mother her.
A week later just
before Christmas we hit a cold spell, I went into the lounge to find them
both curled up together in front of the fire. Oliver woke up and started
licking her, they spent the next 11 years as devoted companions. Playing
together, sleeping together, totally inseparable.

Oliver and Sophie
having a cuddle a few weeks before she died
On the day Sophie
died Oliver seemed to know; it was uncanny how he had spent hours licking
her until she was wet through all over. Kissing her goodbye was how we
saw it.
Following her death
Oliver was depressed for months, he ate very little, hardly moved from
his bed and when we returned from an outing, complained loudly. We considered
the pro's and cons of having another cat and after about 6 months decided
to purchase a kitten - we were told that a kitten might be accepted more
readily.
Was Oliver grateful?
Was he heck-as-like!
We visited a number
of Cat Shows looking at the different breeds, talking to Breeders and
fully intending to buy another Siamese. We were however, smitten
(hence our breed name) with the Bengals we saw.
We spoke to several Bengal breeders before choosing one from Jill Fyfe's
(Glitterglam prefix) litter.
We brought Roxy our
Bengal kitten home in July last year. After a week of spitting and hissing
on Oliver's part and just when we began to despair, they settled down
together. Oliver gained a new lease of life and became kittenish again,
often having a good old rough and tumble with her.
As if that was'nt
enough self-punishment we thought it would be sensible to get a kitten
to keep Roxy company, she was tiring Oliver out with all her energy. We
decided to get another Siamese but after visiting a number of cat shows
we decided on a black Oriental, Mishkana Mae Lee, pictured left
Did they all get on?
Did they heck-as-like!
The 2 females fight
for Oliver's attention and I think Oliver is falling for the black Oriental,
she probably reminds him of Sophie
Gluttons for punishment,
having searched intensively, we purchased a Siamese Blue Point kitten
from the very patient Carolyn of 'Stoxhill' prefix. Lilli will be the
foundation queen for our Siamese line and also a much loved family pet.
Her professional name will be Stoxhill Smitten Inblue.
Lilli is now a year
old, she's absolutely adorable, Misha thinks so too, she loved her from
day one. The problem was she wants to mother her. Whenever she gets into
mischief she grabs her by the neck and saves her, whether Lilli wants
to be saved is another question. Oliver did not take to her immediately,
for 3 days he mooned around the house growling at all the cats, including
the new baby bengals who were fast asleep at the time. On the 4th day
Lilli got brave and pinched his favourite radiator bed. Instead of growling
as he usually did, he cuddled up and went to sleep with her and he's not
growled at her since, in fact I can see a hint of green in Misha's eyes.
Roxy is a bigger hurdle
for Lilli to win over, she has taken a real dislike to her. Each time
they pass she gives Lilli a left hook!
Will they all get
on? Watch this space.
